Center Joel Embiid has signed a contract extension with the Philadelphia 76ers.
The 30-year-old Cameroonian’s new contract is for a maximum of three years and is worth $193m (£145m), according to US reports.
The 2023 NBA MVP has been with the Sixers since the 2014 NBA Draft – and now wants to help them win their first title since 1983.
“I started with the Sixers and I want to stay here for the rest of my career,” Embiid said. “I had no idea when I was drafted as a 20-year-old from Cameroon how lucky I was to be in Philadelphia.
“Despite all the ups and downs, this city and its fans have been everything to me and I am very grateful for the way they have welcomed me.
“Philadelphia is our hometown and it’s time to bring this community an NBA championship.”
Embiid moved to the United States at the age of 16 and attended the University of Kansas.
He averaged 34.7 points, 11 rebounds and 5.6 assists last season.
“Joel has established himself as one of the greatest Sixers of all time and is well on his way to becoming one of the greatest players to ever play the game,” said Daryl Morey, 76ers president of basketball operations.
Embiid was diagnosed with Bell’s palsy that occurred earlier this year.
