Doug Gottlieb, Green Bay basketball coachwho is also a prominent college basketball radio host for Fox Sports, fell to Division II Michigan Tech 72-70 on Wednesday.
Of course, upheavals happen college basketball. But the loss stings a little more given what Gottlieb said last week about wanting to schedule “better teams” in his first season with the Phoenix, and that “you need to, like everyone else does, schedule a few D2s early.”

“One of the reasons I want to play against better teams is because it’s two degrees and snowing outside,” Gottlieb told reporters after Green Bay’s 88-67 loss to Milwaukee on Dec. 11. “I don’t really like the idea of Nobody U coming here and what do we learn by playing a game where we win by 20. There’s a methodology to that. And I’m going to have to adapt going forward .”
Gottlieb did not directly call Michigan Tech “Nobody U.” However, he was referring to teams of a higher caliber than Michigan Tech.
Gottlieb responded Wednesday to his quote, which went viral after Green Bay’s loss.
“I’m done with this bullshit” Gottlieb wrote about formerly known as Twitter. “We scheduled. Including Michigan Tech. I have never criticized anyone on our schedule. Now, back to work.”
The namesake host of “The Doug Gottlieb Show” is in his first coaching season, as the former Oklahoma State star has been a college basketball broadcaster for many years. The Phoenix fell to 2-11 on the season after Thursday’s loss and are expected to win just two more games this season. according to KenPom.
Gottlieb began his playing career at Notre Dame before transferring and playing one season at Golden West College. He then played three years for the Cowboys, where he was one of the nation’s top passers, leading the nation in assists as a junior and senior, averaging 8.8 and 8.6 assists per match, respectively.
Gottlieb has covered basketball for ESPN, CBS and Fox. He still hosts his radio show while coaching the struggling Phoenix.
