LIV Golf’s £44 million season finale is being held at Trump’s National Doral Course and the former US president took part in the Pro-Am event on Thursday.
Donald Trump has suggested LIV Golf has “unlimited money” as it prepares to host the inaugural season finale at its golf course.
Stars of the separatist circuit supported by the Saudis will descend on the Trump National Doral course in Miami for this weekend’s event, worth around £44 million.
This is the second LIV event held at one of the the former American president course, following the Bedminster competition in July.
Trump, an avid golfer, has aligned himself with the competition since its inception and told PGA Tour stars to “take the money now” ahead of this summer event.
He took the course in Miami alongside his son Donald Jr and Brooks Koepka for the Pro-Am on Thursday and was asked for his thoughts on the controversial competition.
“Very good. It works great. Unlimited money,” Trump says in a clip filmed by a WPBF 25 reporter on the course.
He added: “I think the Tour really missed a great opportunity and now they’re in a much more difficult position,” Trump told reporters after playing 18 holes in the Pro Am competition.
“It’s a big moment, it’s a lot of money, unlimited money, they love golf, they really love golf and the Saudis have done a fantastic job,” Trump said.
“The enthusiasm, we hear the music, we hear a lot of things, it’s different and so we have a good time.”
His comments come after he went public with his support for LIV Golf in July when he suggested there would be a merger with Tours – despite the sport’s brewing civil war.
Trump also slyly targeted his successor Joe Biden, having previously called himself the best golfer among other presidents.
After a photo shoot, Trump turned to the camera and joked: “Do you think Biden could do that? I don’t think so.”
The competition in Miami takes place by team invitation, with the group of 4 Aces expected to be among the first. This lineup is made up of Dustin Johnson, Patrick Reed, Pat Perez and Taylor Gooch.
