Watson signed a one-year, two-way deal with the Red Wings on Monday and was placed on waivers by the team.
Drafted by the Nashville Predators in the first round of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, Watson spent last season playing for the Tampa Bay Lightning, recording two goals and two assists in 33 regular season games.
During his 10 years in the NHL, Watson played for the Predators, Lightning and Ottawa Senators. In 515 career NHL regular season games, he scored 60 goals and 58 assists for 118 points.
As Watson joins the Griffins, it will be the first time he sees AHL action since the 2018-19 season with the Milwaukee Admirals.
