Even when players are entirely in good shape, it can be difficult for team captains to secure their services, because the Davis Cup links are regularly played the week after a big home.
Andy Murray played sparingly for three years at the start of the twenties, when GB was outside the world group, but Smith is Optimistic Draper will continue to play for the team.
“I have the impression that players want to be part of it,” he said.
“We, at LTA, and the players here, you can say that they appreciate this, they appreciate the gathering.
“Our work this weekend is to try to stay in the best group so that we can try to win it next year, but there are clearly more conversations that must have had planning, to try to bring the players who go deep in the Slams.
“If you want them to play, asking them for a few days of recovery – sometimes to travel very far or change areas – it will be difficult.
“So I have the impression that there is a strong appetite to represent your country in the Davis Cup, but there is work to do in formatting.”
A biceps and a torn illness prevented Norrie from playing the Davis Cup since the 2023 quarter -finals with Serbia.
The 30 -year -old has already played 22 tournaments this year, but says that Davis Cup Weeks is “very different”.
“It’s always one of my favorite weeks, playing for your country,” he said.
“It’s an excellent group of guys and girls – that’s exactly what I want to do.
“It’s a very different week for a week on the tour. It’s almost like another rest – it’s so precious week.
“You could rest, you could practice, you could play another tournament. But for me, I always want to try to prioritize this in my career.”
