Oklahoma Earlier seem placed in the middle of their defensive line. Gracen Halton has had an exceptional year. Jayden Jackson has landed a starting role as a true freshman. Damonic Williams returns for another year. And then there’s former five-star defensive tackle David Stone, who will be expected to contribute more in 2025.
This is a nice four-man rotation for the Sooners at the defensive tackle position. They also have Markus Strong, who didn’t play much in 2024, but when he did play, he showed an edge that Todd Bates can continue to develop. Oklahoma signed four-star defensive tackle Trent Wilson, who also brings a lot of promise to the position.
However, the Sooners could add another big body in the middle of the defense via the transfer portal. Former Clemson four-star defensive tackle Tre Williams has reportedly entered the portal, according to Pete Nakos from On3.
Williams was recruited by Todd Bates and Brent Venables and spent five years with the Clemson Tigers. In the event of a graduate transfer, he would have an additional year of eligibility. He would be another veteran presence in the middle of the Sooners’ defense, filling the void left by the departure of Da’Jon Terry.
In 2024, Williams has recorded 14 total tackles, three tackles for loss and two sacks in just 303 snaps. He was a key part of a defense that allowed 23.4 points per game to the ACC champion Tigers.
Both of Williams’ sacks came in Clemson’s College Football Playoff loss to Texas. Longhorns.
He’s an experienced player who knows Brent Venables’ system and could add to what the Sooners are trying to do on defense in 2025.
