The Kansas City Chiefs moved closer to an unprecedented “three-peat” after beating the Houston Texans in the NFL play-offs.
After earning a first-round bye, the Chiefs opened the divisional round at home against the Houston Texans on Saturday.
And the two-time defending NFL champions rolled to a 23-14 victory to keep their hopes of becoming the first team to win three consecutive Super Bowls alive.
Led by quarterback Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City has reached the NFL championship game four times in the last five years, winning it three times.
Last season, they became the first team to win back-to-back Super Bowls since Tom Brady’s New England Patriots in 2004 and 2005, and they are back one win away from the big game.
Travis Kelce also played a pivotal role in Kansas City’s dynasty and the tight end’s touchdown run early in the fourth quarter sealed the victory. Kareem Hunt scored his other touchdown, helping them take a 13-6 halftime lead.
Houston kicker Ka’imi Fairbairn missed two chances to tie the game, sending a field goal and an extra point attempt wide, before seeing a late field goal attempt blocked.
But the Chiefs were ultimately comfortable winners, meaning they will play their seventh straight AFC Championship Game next week against either the Baltimore Ravens or Buffalo Bills, who meet on Sunday.
