Marsh comes to Chicago from Las Vegas, where he served as an assistant coach and head of player development under Becky Hammon.
The Aces won back-to-back WNBA championships in 2022 and 2023 with Marsh on the team in Vegas. Marsh was hired in Las Vegas in 2022.
Marsh was also on the Toronto Reports staff when the Raptors won the 2019 NBA championship.
Marsh has worked with three-time WNBA MVP A’Ja Wilson, Kelsey Plum, Jackie Young and many others on the Vegas roster. Las Vegas lost in the WNBA semifinals to the eventual WNBA champion New York Liberty.
The move has already received the approval of the biggest name on Sky’s roster. Sky star Angel Reese simply posted ‘W’ to X after the hire became public.
“We promised our fans that we would be very intentional with our next coaching hire, with the goal of being a playoff and championship contender every year,” said Nadia Rawlinson, Chicago co-owner and president of operations. Sky, in a written statement. “Coach Marsh brings a wealth of coaching experience and responsible leadership to our young team, and we look forward to a new era of Chicago Sky basketball with Coach Marsh at the helm.”
Marsh will be tasked with working with Sky rookie sensations Reese and Kamilla Cardoso, while also working with Sky general manager Jeff Pagliocca to develop a roster that will feature multiple first-round picks following the 2025 WNBA Draft.
Sky’s hire will replace the position left vacant when the team fired Teresa Weatherspoon after just one year. The move had a ripple effect throughout the league, as Weatherspoon’s status as a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame was well known.
Weatherspoon helped the Sky enter the WNBA playoff race, but was eliminated on the final day of the regular season. Sky management said it believed change was necessary, but did not give many details about the decision.
With the arrival of Marsh, it becomes clear that the team is placing emphasis on player development. With the franchise building around Reese and Cardoso, the team will have two picks in the 2025 WNBA Draft: one in the top four when the lottery is announced and the 10th overall pick in the draft via Connecticut.
Now Pagliocca has chosen his head coach.
He can turn to building the team he wants.
