One more WNBA franchise jumps off the coaching carousel as the Chicago Sky hiring Tyler Marsh to a multi-year contract to be their head coach, a league source confirmed Saturday. ESPN was the first to report it.
Marsh has served as an assistant coach in Las Vegas for the past three seasons, leading the Aces’ player development as the team won back-to-back titles in 2022-23. He played a particularly decisive role in the growth of Jackie Young becoming the Most Improved Player in 2022 and a multiple-time All-Star and Olympian. Player development will be an integral part of the role in Chicago, with three young players — Angel Reese, Kamilla Cardoso And Chennedy Carter – forming the core of the sky.
Chicago finished two games out of the playoffs in 2024 and beyondand it’s from first-year coach Teresa Weatherspoon.
Marsh is also a first-time head coach. He previously worked as an assistant coach in the NBA with the Indiana Pacers and as a player development coach with the Toronto Raptors, including in 2019 when the Raptors won the NBA championship. He also worked as an assistant in the G League.
Ace Before Alysha Clark shared a farewell message to Marsh via X, writing that the Sky “has an amazing one.” Reese also seemed to approve of the hiring with a message addressed to X that simply said “W”.
Marh is the second assistant coach to leave Las Vegas head coach Becky Hammon’s staff this offseason after Natalie Nakase has taken the head coaching job at Golden State.
Chicago is the third franchise to hire a new coach since the end of the regular season, with the The Sparks of Los Angeles, Washington Mystics, Connecticut Sunshine, Dallas Wings And Dream of Atlanta always with openings. The Sky benefits from one of the most high-profile assistants on the market as it resets its rebuild. The franchise also broke ground on the construction of a training center last month.
