1. New Big Ten media deals announced Thursdaythe conference leaving ESPN and partnering with CBS for a weekly 3:30 p.m. ET game and NBC for a weekly primetime game.
While it won’t have a significant impact on college football viewers (you’ll see every game you were going to see, just on different channels), one theme has emerged more than any other when it comes to spinoffs.
People are NOT happy that CBS is apparently using their theme song (which has been used for years primarily before SEC games) for their upcoming Big Ten games.
CBS’ college football song is one of the most iconic in sports history, so I understand why the network would keep it. CBS has used it for years on non-SEC games, like Army-Navy or the occasional Mountain West game.
But the song East synonymous with the SEC. It seems inappropriate to apply it to something entirely new. It’s like breaking up with someone and then giving your new partner one of their sweatshirts that they left behind. It’s just not cool.
There’s also the narrative that the Big Ten isn’t worthy of such a historic theme song. Now, I’m a New Yorker who doesn’t have a dog in this fight, but the Big Ten just isn’t as sexy as the SEC when it comes to teams and matchups.
Yes, the SEC absolutely has some dogs, like Vanderbilt and South Carolina, but the Big Ten is filled with rough teams.
In fact, an extremely creative content creator made this video of the CBS theme song about the Big Ten’s weak points, and it works better than the version CBS released.
As I’ve said before: It’s unrealistic to expect CBS to abandon a wildly popular theme song. But CBS keeping the theme song is simply wrong. And the network is hearing it loud and clear.
2. Speaking of theme songs, Amazon Prime has released its theme song for the upcoming season of Thursday Night Football.
3. Deshaun Watson is a complete joke with its non-apologies, fake apologies and lack of remorse. It seems that the people around Watson are also a joke.
Here’s what Watson’s personal quarterback coach tweeted Thursday:
So Jenny Vretnas, an excellent journalist who worked for Sports Illustrated and now works for THE New York Times, asks for a comment, prints the comment and gets criticized by someone from Watson’s camp? If Watson’s camp didn’t want to comment, they should have just said “no comment” or not responded. Instead, in a completely ignorant gesture, they said: “We will stay away The New York Times” in response to a reporter requesting comment.
Furthermore, Watson’s financial backer believes that Vrentas is not interested in reporting. No one has reported on Watson’s behavior as much as Vrentas. Person.
And calling Vrentas “weak character” when you work for Deshaun Watson seems to pose a credibility problem.
4. Now let’s move on to something lighter. This video of Ben Affleck saying hello to someone then immediately changing his facial expression had huge “I’ve been there” vibes.
My followers have experienced other instances of rapid facial expression changes.
5. Loyal Traina Thoughts readers know that I’m all about new Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel. He is arguably one of the most fascinating people in sports today. Although I find it hard to believe that Tua is this good, I like how McDaniel explained what Tua does to Dan Le Batard. There is no head coach like him in sports today.
6. This week SI media podcast features an interview with Tim Burke, also known on Twitter as @Bubbaprogone of the elders Deadspin journalists who broke the story of Manti Te’o’s girlfriend hoax in 2013, which is the subject of a new two-part series on Netflix.
Burke gives details of how Deadspin I got some information about Te’o and how long they worked on the story before publishing it. He also talks about being surprised by the reaction to the story, what he wanted to accomplish with the story, and what he would do differently.
Burke also talks about the recent brouhaha he found himself in after posting a video of Sean Hannity and Ron DeSantis, how he was the first person to post the uncensored video of Will Smith slapping Chris Rock at the Oscars, of how he is able to monitor so many people. things throughout the day and more.
The podcast concludes with the weekly “Traina Thoughts” segment with Sal Licata, from WFAN and SNY in New York. This week, I’m launching a new talk on streaming, with the new NFL+ service as the target. We also discuss the NBA vs. NFL battle that is now scheduled for Christmas Day, the NFL’s decision to add a Black Friday game next season and much more.
