Cole Caufield will honor Johnny Gaudreau in a touching way this season.
The Montreal Canadiens forward announced he would wear number 13 this season in tribute to Gaudreau in a social media post Tuesday.
Gaudreau and his brother Matthieu, died last week after being hit by a car while riding their bikes in their hometown of Salem County, New Jersey.
“Playing with your hero is something most people dream of,” Caufield wrote on Instagram. “I was lucky enough to be Johnny’s teammate last summer (at the 2024 IIHF World Championship) and it didn’t take long to realize what a great person he was. He was the most welcoming, genuine and funniest guy I’ve ever met.
“He was someone everyone gravitated towards and I took every opportunity I could to be with him. Not only was he an incredible hockey player and teammate, but he was down to earth and truly cared about every person he met.”
