Britain’s Sonay Kartal beat Japan’s Mai Hontama in three sets at the Jasmin Open in Tunisia to reach her first career WTA quarter-final.
British number four Kartal qualified for the last 16 with a resounding 6-2 6-2 victory.
The 22-year-old from Brighton is ranked 46 places below Hontama, at 151st in the world.
She took a 3-0 lead in both sets and won each set despite her opponent managing to come back.
Beating Hontama means she will face either No. 3 seed Diane Parri or world No. 130 Yuliia Starodubtseva in the quarter-finals on Thursday.
Kartal, who was Emma Raducanu’s main domestic rival as a junior, reached the third round at Wimbledon earlier this year before losing to second seed Coco Gauff.
