A two-month national research to find the new Bakersfield College football coach was revealed on Friday by the institution to be Tyler Thompson, who is from Shafter, a former British Columbia player and who was Coach in the Renegades program for 11 years.
Thompson played Shafter High and was a defensive back for the Renegades (2008-09) and at the University of Nevada-Reno (2010-12).
He became assistant coach of British Columbia in 2014 and 2019 was promoted defensive coordinator by head coach Jeff Chudy, who trained Thompson as a British Columbia player and hired him with his staff . Thompson remained in the role of coordinator for the duration of the R. Todd Littlejohn chief trainer from 2020-24 and which Thompson replaces as head coach.
“I am really honored to accept the role of head coach of this incredible program,” said Thompson in a statement. “The tradition, passion and pride that this team represents is something that I deeply respect, and I am delighted to work alongside our players and coaches.”
The British Columbia press release said Thompson had obtained the chief’s competition in research that included more than 45 candidates across the country and Canada. Six candidates were questioned.

Thompson’s hiring has made him the 12th head coach of the program since 1922.
In addition to coaching in British Columbia, Thompson is a deputy professor in the British Columbia Health and Physical Education Department.
Thompson holds a diploma in arts in British Columbia Arts, a baccalaureate from the University of Nevada Reno and a master’s degree from Fresno Pacific University.
Bolton said that an introductory press conference in Thompson is likely to take place this week.
