Oklahoma offensive coordinator Seth Littrell locks arms with Wyatt Gilmore (42) and David Stone (0) before a University of Oklahoma (OU) Sooners spring football game at Gaylord Family-Oklahoma Memorial Stadium in Norman, Oklahoma on Saturday, April 20, 2024.

With Oklahoma Earlier sitting at 4-3 in their first season in the SEC, and with OU’s offense completely stuck in the mud, a change was made at the offensive coordinator position.

After the Sooners lost 35-9 to South Carolina on Saturday, head coach Brent Venables decided to go in a different direction with the offense.

Offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Seth Littrell was fired, according to a report by George Stoia of SoonerScoop, who covers the team for On3 Sports. The report was also confirmed by ESPN’s Pete Thamel.

Littrell was the primary play caller, and that duty will now be handled by co-offensive coordinator/tight ends coach Joe Jon Finley for the remainder of the season. Kevin Johns, who is an offensive analyst, will also play a big role in the offense. Johns previously served as offensive coordinator, serving in that role at Duke.

OU is currently averaging just 22.1 points per game through the 2024 season, which places them 107th out of 134 teams at the FBS level. They’ve been held below double digits in their last two games, both losses, scoring just one touchdown.

Littrell was promoted from his offensive analyst role in 2023 to co-offensive coordinator with Finley before the bowl game last season. The move follows the departure of Jeff Lebby to take the head coaching position at Mississippi State.

Littrell was named play-caller for OU’s offense, but he lasted only eight games total and only seven games this season before being relieved of his duties.

The veteran coach was the head man at North Texas until he was fired in 2022, making his way to Venables’ staff in Norman before last season.

Now the focus turns to trying to salvage this season with an offense that can at least put something on the board, but perhaps more importantly, to the impending hire Venables will make to run the offense in 2025 .

As it stands, next year is shaping up to be a make-or-break season for Venables at Norman. It is absolutely imperative that he recruits this OC correctly this offseason.
