Boonsboro junior Piper Meredith shot her best round ever – a 3-under 69 – to win her second Maryland District 1, Class 2A-1A women’s golf championship at Black Rock on Monday.
“It’s so surreal. I’m still processing it,” Meredith said.
The Warriors also qualified for the state tournament as a team, finishing fourth out of 15 2A-1A teams with 335 shots. The USA will take place on the University of Maryland Golf Course October 28-30.
Meredith won the 2A-1A District 1 girls title with an 84 as a freshman, then finished fourth at states. Last year she placed second in District 1 with a 73 and finished sixth in the United States.
On Monday, she birdied the fifth and seventh holes to shoot 1 under on the front nine, then had a streak of three consecutive birdies on holes 11 through 13 en route to a 2-under back nine.
The key to its success? “Definitely mental,” Meredith said. “If I make a bad shot, I move on to the next one. My confidence has improved.”
“She has consistency and confidence in her game and her shooting,” Warriors coach John Miller said. “She doesn’t let a bad shot or a bad hole ruin her round. She regroups and lives to play the next hole.”
Meredith’s goal in the United States is simple: “We’re going to do everything,” she said. “Knowing the course, I trust myself and am more aware of where my shots are, which holes I can attack and which holes I should be more conservative on.”
“You can’t rule it out,” Miller said. “If you bet on anyone, you’ll bet on Piper.”
CMC Golf Tournament: Kadan Jones and Piper Meredith give Boonsboro individual title
Kadan Jones (79), Trenten Spencer (93) and Nate Montgomery (94) completed the Boonsboro quartet, which will play in the United States in three weeks. Everyone will be looking to improve during Monday’s rounds, contested in gusty wind conditions.
Jones finished ninth in the Class 2A-1A boys individual standings a year ago.
“It’s a clean slate on a level playing field,” Miller said. “We’ll make sure to get them there and have a practice ride – at least one.”
South Carroll’s Patrick Carl shot a 69 to win the District 2A-1A boys title, and the Cavaliers also won the team title with 298 shots.
The District 1 Class 4A-3A individual champions were Jackson Streett of Manchester Valley (boys, 71) and Claire Son of Urbana (girls, 69). Manchester Valley won the team title with 314 shots.
