Aston Villa are looking to strengthen the squad during the January transfer window. The premier league club are very interested by signing Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen. A report of Radio Marca claims the Birmingham club have already made contact regarding the Germany international.
Ter Stegen transfer saga:
Ter Stegen is currently struggling to get regular matches in Spain. For this reason, the 33-year-old is looking for a way out. Joan García is the Catalan giants’ first choice this season. Ter Stegen has had a huge career with six La Liga titles and plenty of European experience.

Still, he’s not interested in sitting on the bench at this stage of his career. On top of that, what happens with Emiliano Martínez plays a big role in this decision. Argentina’s World Cup winner is still a target for several major European clubs.
If Martínez leaves Villa Park, the club would immediately need someone with as much experience. Ter Stegen fits that mold perfectly because of his passing skills and leadership.

Currently, Unai Emery’s side are third in the Premier League. They need experienced players to maintain this momentum for a Champions League place during a difficult second half of the season. What’s more, Barcelona seem happy to let this move happen.

The board wants to deal with players who don’t start raising money for new signings. Given that Ter Stegen earns high salaries but barely plays for Hansi Flick, letting him go helps the Spanish club’s finances. Ultimately, moving to England works for everyone. This gives the German keeper the start he wants and gives Villa a proven winner in goal.
Opinion: Do Aston Villa need Ter Stegen?
Aston Villa should only go after Ter Stegen if Emiliano Martínez actually leaves in January. If they bring in the German veteran while keeping Martínez, it would leave them with two expensive goalkeepers, which would disrupt the team’s chemistry. However, if the Argentine moves on, Ter Stegen is a great affordable option that brings immediate stability.
