The demands of parenting are nothing new. Find time for your childrenyour partneryour work, yourself…it’s a never-ending daily work to follow. Now imagine that on top of all that, you are also a professional athlete who physically exhausts your body every day, coming home to care for two children under the age of two, all while fighting for financial equality for yourself, your colleagues, and generations of women to come.

Actually, scratch that. We can’t even to start to imagine it, we must therefore ask ourselves: are Ashlyn Harris and Ali Krieger secretly superheroes?

Although Harris, 37, has been freshly retired since November 14, the couple is known for their superstar soccer playing with the United States Women’s National Soccer Team (USWNT), helping them to World Cup victories in 2015 and 2019. Krieger, 38, still plays for NY/NJ Gotham FC, for whom Harris now works as a coach. Global Creative Advisor. Additionally, since February 2021, they have also become parents and adopted their second child in August 2022.

Finding your balance on and off the field

Harris and Krieger say one of their keys to staying grounded is finding the right vitamins and supplements for their body. The couple recently partnered with Align Probiotic for the launch of Dual Action Probiotic for Womenformulated to soothe bloating and intestinal discomfortpromotes vaginal health and relieves symptoms of premenstrual syndrome. “(We’ve both been) professional athletes, we’re now professional moms, and the importance of having good overall health — everything that helps us on the field and off the field — we really value,” Harris says.

“It balances you out for the whole day,” Krieger adds. “And also, they help women (understand) the importance of… supporting both gut health and vaginal healthwhich I think is very inspiring because we don’t talk about it enough.

Nutritional balance is also a crucial cornerstone. “Ali is a little more vegetarian than me,” Harris says. “So when we cook, we keep that in mind. We have about an 80/20 balance in terms of 80% is herbalabout 20% is sometimes meat. They are also aware of the impact of their diet on their long-term health: dementia common in the family, the couple says they avoid fried foods, which are one of the the worst foods for your brain.

“It’s also our way of life, because we need to eat healthily to perform at our best,” says Krieger. “You take your sandwiches and chips from time to time. And we make sure to include these little treats so as not to gorge ourselves later.

“If we are good, the house is good”

Harris and Krieger say prioritizing give and take in their relationship is essential to succeeding as parents.

“Obviously, it’s really difficult to have two children under two years old because… we don’t have as many things sleep like before,” says Krieger The healthy. “But I think we really try to have a good balance between us. So if Ash is extremely tired one day and I’m extremely tired the next, we’ll allow each other to take that time to go run errands that you need, and take some time off or take a walk. sumand just try to sleep because it’s really important… When we need a break, we’re not afraid to tell ourselves.

Harris says the two are “full-fledged moms” when they’re at home. “I think the biggest key factor for Ali and I is that we always say this: If we’re good, the house is good,” she says. “How we interact determines how our children will see love for the first time, and camaraderie and understanding. So we really take these things seriously and we make time for each other because I love my wife, but I really love my wife. I think there is a big difference. And I think people who are in relationships should understand that. I love my wife very much. I love being with my wife and I love being in contact with my wife.

Visiting their vacation home in Harris’ hometown of Satellite Beach, Florida, is one of their favorite ways to center themselves. They say being by the water is an “anchor” for both of them. Go for bike rides, walk along the beach and taking their little ones to a park are all opportunities to find comfort and take care of themselves as a family.

A constant fight

This couple is committed to a peaceful family life, but an important moment in Harris and Krieger’s careers was defined by conflict. In May 2022, a six-year legal battle finally ended when the U.S. Soccer Federation announced it would equalize World Cup awards for the men’s and women’s national teams, something both women had advocated for.

Even with this victory, they both know that the road to equality in women’s sport is still long. “What is earthing and humility is when you’ve won everything, you’re so decorated in your sport and then you look at your bank account. It’s humbling,” Harris says. “That’s when you know. We don’t have a cushion. We don’t have time to rest.

“The fight will never end,” adds Krieger. “And so the work will never end.”
