Arsene Wenger will always retain the love and respect of Arsenal fans, even if they may not appreciate the way he talks about a current star.
The Frenchman left the club in 2018, with current manager Mikel Arteta taking over in 2019 following the end of Unai Emery’s short-term tenure and Freddie Ljungberg’s one-month interim role.
Arsene Wenger’s latest comments could anger Arsenal fans
To date, the Spaniard has failed to lift the Gunners to the promised land of a Premier League title, last won by Wenger’s Invincibles in the 2003/04 season, and that could be down to decisions like the one he made recently against Bournemouth.
Recruit a Barcelona striker could well push the north Londoners again this season, although Arteta clearly needs to accept the limitations of the players he has in his squad, and not try to merge them into something they clearly are not.
Kai Havertz for example.
“It depends on how you want to defend or how you want to play,” Wenger said. beIN Sports when asked if he could choose between Havertz and England captain Harry Kane as a striker.
“Havertz contributes more to the all-round game, defensively he works very hard, offensively he scores less goals than Kane and will never score the number of goals Kane scores. It’s more like 10 and a half or 9 and a half years.
“Kane is the center forward. We have to organize the team around Kane.
Although Wenger is apparently right about Havertz’s lack of goals compared to an outright striker like Kane, it must be borne in mind that the German plays a very different attacking style to his contemporary.
One could even argue that, in fact, Havertz’s overall game is much more helpful to the team as a whole.
