Argo High School girls varsity tennis won the South Suburban Red Conference title for the fourth time in school history.
Before this season, the last title was won in 2017.
This year’s team is made up of Gabriela Dabrowski, Olivia Dlugi, Abigail Grenier, Julia Grenier, Ashley Jauregui, Sofia Jauregui-Ibarra, Athena Litsogiannis, Olivia Lopez, Lana Murphy, Isabel Sieczka, Kaylynn Thiele and Angela Zatloka.
The conference tournament follows a similar structure to regular-season games, varsity coach Taylor Loux said.
“We have two players playing in singles matches and six players playing in three separate doubles matches. This gives a total of five positions, 1S, 2S, 1D, 2D, 3D. Each victory in the conference tournament earns points for the team in addition to the player(s) advancing in the table. The team with the most points is the conference champion. In the event of a tie, the team with the most first places wins the title.
“This year we were able to get the victory thanks to every part of our roster playing very well in the tournament. Our first singles player, Lana Murphy, won her flight. Our second singles player, Olivia Dlugi, finished fourth. Our first doubles team, Angela Zatloka and Gabi Dabrowski, finished second. Our second doubles team, Julia Grenier and Abbi Grenier, won their flight. Our third doubles team, Ashley Jauregui and Olivia Lopez, finished third. This gave us a total of 21 points, putting us tied with Shepard. It came down to how many championships we won, and we had two. Shepard had one. That means we won the conference title.
“We have four particularly strong senior leaders who have worked tirelessly over the past several years to progress to a place where a conference title was achievable. Our captains Angela, Gabi, Julia and Lana have been the driving force behind our team’s success. Their dedication to the sport and their leadership roles have not only guided our team to success on the court, but have also played a pivotal role in fostering a strong sense of community within our tennis program. We played a busy schedule this season with over 30 matches to prepare for the conference tournament, and these girls finished with some of the best records in Argo Tennis history. I’m very proud of this group’s accomplishments and can’t wait to see all the great things they accomplish after leaving Argo.
There are six All-Conference players this year. Singles player: Lana Murphy. Double teams: Gabriela Dabrowski & Angela Zatloka, Abigail Grenier & Julia Grenier.
