Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese will play for the Rose Basketball Club in the inaugural season of Unrivaled, a 3-on-3 league founded by WNBA stars Napheesa Collier and Breanna Stewart.
Reese will join former Sky players Kahleah Copper and Azurá Stevens on Rose’s roster alongside guards Chelsea Gray, Brittney Sykes and Lexie Hull. Rose’s coach is Nola Henry, previously a player development coach for the Los Angeles Sparks and assistant director of basketball operations for the Connecticut Sun.
Teresa Weatherspoon, former Sky coach will coach the Vinyl lineup, which includes Arike Ogunbowale, Rhyne Howard, Aliyah Boston, Jordin Canada, Rae Burrell and Dearica Hamby. The other four teams will be coached by Phil Handy (Mist), DJ Sackmann (Lunar Owls), Adam Harrington (Phantom) and Andrew Wade (Laces).
Two of the 36 players have not yet been announced, although ESPN reported Wednesday that Indiana Fever superstar Caitlin Clark would not participate in Unrivaled.
Unmatched president Alex Bazzell previously explained that coaches were selected with a focus on player development. The coaching staff will develop individualized workout and training plans to align with athletes’ goals during the offseason, providing a hybrid environment for players to focus on their development without the rigors of playing in a foreign league.
This is crucial for Reese, who started the offseason with a long list of development objectives: Better finishing through contact, improving his footwork around the rim and extending his shot profile beyond the restricted area.
Each Unrivaled team will play 14 regular season games over eight weeks, starting January 17. The league will not follow traditional FIBA 3-on-3 rules, allowing for extended playing time. All season will be broadcast on TNT and TruTV.
