Angel, aka Bayou Barbie, led the Lady Tigers to their first national title in April and was named tournament MVP. All eyes were on the 21-year-old during this year’s March Madness as she captivated the world with her talent and passion for the game that helped propel women’s basketball into the national spotlight.
Although the world has tried to tear her to shreds for doing the same John Cena hand motion as Iowa’s Caitlin Clark, she has always maintained her stance that passion and trash talk are part of the game and if it were men in their place, that would be the case. This was not controversial.
“Caitlin and I are cool,” Angel said. Sports Illustrated. “It’s just about forcing people to accept that women can say stupid things. The female side is penalized for this, or we are considered that we are not ladies and that we do not respect the rules. We work as hard as men. Women can be who we are. Women can be competitive.
It was this confidence that led the hoops star to enter the transfer portal – leaving Maryland after two seasons and joining LSU under Coach Kim Mulkey.
After breaking the NCAA record for double-doubles in a season (34), being chosen as a first-team All-America selection and intriguing the nation enough that 9.9 million viewers watched the game most-watched women’s championship of all time, the title victory was the icing on the cake for Reese.
The dancer’s newfound fame has led to brand deals that put her net worth at around 1.3 million and her social media following at nearly 3 times that amount.
Until Angel enters the WNBA draft in another year, she will have her eyes on another national title and become back-to-back champion. Although there is more to come for the star player, she is grateful for what she has accomplished so far.
“To have so many people come back to me and say, ‘You made a difference. You are part of history, I have accepted that,” Angel shared. “Just being able to be a part of all of this has been amazing for me this year, and it’s been a blessing.”
