Mirra Andreeva entered the story by becoming the youngest player to win a WTA 1000 title after the 17 -year -old won the Dubai tennis championships.
The Russian beat Clara Tauson 7-6 (7-1) 6-1 and her victory means that she will go up next week in the top 10 for the first time.
Andreeva beat the winners of the Grand Chelem Marketa Vondrousova, Iga Swiatek and Elena Rybakina on the road to the final.
“I set myself a goal to be in the top 10 by the end of the year,” she said.
“Now it’s late February and I’ve already done it, so it’s something incredible for me.”
Tauson, 22, from Denmark, had gone 2-0 at the start, but Andreeva quickly settled in his match to break and level the match at 2-2.
There was not much to separate the two while the first set went to an equality break, where Andreeva won the first six points before Tauson sends a return for a long time.
Andreeva then dominated the second set, walking in an advance of 5-1 before the return of number 38 of Tauson, left for a long time to seal the title for the adolescent.
“I’m just super happy with the way I played,” added Andreeva. “I was nervous. I think you could see him during the match with all these double faults, some errors.
“So I’m really happy to be able to manage and face the pressure. And now it’s just incredible.
“It’s something I dreamed of and now my dream has come true, so I’m just, I’m speechless right now.”
