Monaco (AP)-Carlos Alcaraz, second seeded, moved in the quarter-finals of Monte Carlo Masters after defeating the qualifier Daniel Altmaier 6-3, 6-1 Thursday.

Alcaraz saved nine from the 10 break points he faced and took five of the seven chances he had.

“Honestly, it was difficult, Danny plays very well,” said Alcaraz, third. “The score does not show how difficult it was.”

During his first Clay-Court tournament this season, the Spaniard won four consecutive sets for the defeat of only five games since he abandoned the opening set to Francisco Cerundolo in his 43-year-old match.

Friday, Alcaraz plays against Arthur son who won an impressive 6-2, 6-3 against the 2023 champion Andrey Rublev in the round of 16.

Son progressed around the quarter-finals to three consecutive masters after Indian Wells and Miami last month, and increased his record to 14-6 this season.

Two other seed players were upset on Thursday.

Casper Ruud, the fourth seeded, lost against Alexei Popyrin 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 and the fifth head Jack Draper was beaten by Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 6-3, 6-7 (6), 6-4. The British left -hander Draper had service problems with 10 double faults and landed less than half of his first services.

The Davidovich, ranked 42nd, which eliminated the American seeded Ben Shelton in the first round, faces the popyrine in the quarterfinals.

Triple Monte Carlo champion, Stefanos Tsisipas, played the late match against Nuno Borges not classified.
