The first major championship of the year ended just a few hours ago, leaving the golf world stunned! From weather issues to stunning final round performances, the Masters was everything fans hoped for and more. At the end, everyone chanted only two words: LIV Golf. Breakaway tour players dominated at Augusta. Even though they didn’t manage to win first place, they won the hearts of many athletes! Watching them burn down the iconic major raised many questions for fans about what’s next for the Defectors tour.

Despite the horrendous rain that pelted the Augusta event, the major was filled with drama and excitement. From day one, Brooks Koepkawho was in the has been in the spotlight in the golf world for some time now due to his antics, did not hold back. He fought his way through the best players on the course and finished the third round with a 2-shot lead.

Unfortunately, Koepka was unable to maintain his strong performance and saw his 2-stroke lead quickly turn into a 4-stroke deficit as Jon Rahm did what he does best and rose to the top on Sunday with a total score of 12 under par. Koepka wasn’t the only LIV golfer to shine on the Augusta course; Phil Mickelson also attracted a lot of attention!

Threatening into the top 20 through the first 3 rounds, Lefty’s skills increased in the final day. Create history and break records, he finished Sunday with a score of 65, the lowest anyone over 50 has shot at Augusta. But his brilliant breakthrough still wasn’t enough for him to get his hands on a fourth green jacket, and he settled for a tied second place alongside Koepka as Rahm lifted the trophy.

LIV Golf players lost the war, but with grace

Although they failed to secure the top spot, the players who jumped ship and joined the other team certainly gave the PGA Tour faithful a run for their money. Of the 18 LIV players who participated in the event, 12 made the cut and competed in the final two rounds. Additionally, even though the Tour had numbers on their side, players in the new league took 3 of the top 5 spots in the major tournament.

Patrick Reed joined Mickelson and Koepka in the top 5, tied for fourth, 5 shots behind the leader. The skills demonstrated by LIV golfers made it clear that they possess some of the best talent in the golfing world and should not be excluded. They brought to life CEO Greg Norman’s words from October 2022, where he said: “LIV is definitely here to stay. We’re not going anywhere.”

By defeating the majority of the PGA Tour’s top talent, they have solidified LIV Golf’s place in the golf world. Through their actions, they showed everyone that the Saudi-backed series was not only here to stay but also more than a viable contender for the tour. But fans and maybe even players can’t help but wonder what’s next after this bold statement!

The big question for LIV Golf

The epic performance of the players in the new series gave rise to one main question: does this show of force help them in any way? LIV Golf is currently coveting one thing: OGWR points. Despite their multiple calls and requests, the new league has yet to receive world ranking points for its events.

Norman and the other top brass are certainly hoping that the brilliance of their players will certainly tip the scales in their favor and show the OWGR committee that the players do indeed deserve ranking points for regular events in the Saudi-backed league. After all, as the shark claimed in an exclusive interview with Today’s Golfer in December last year, “People want to see the best competition.»

Could the new league see more fans arrive?

Another thing the golf world is certainly wondering is whether this has made things better for LIV fans. Since its emergence, loyal PGA Tour fans have boycotted the league. But maybe now that they’ve seen firsthand what the players who jumped ship are capable of doing, LIV’s viewership might start to increase.

Now, I don’t think this will get more people to watch LIV. And I still think the team concept that their whole business is built on is based on supporting life. But it’s hard to justify simply ignoring the circuit which has 3 of the top 6 Masters rankings.

The performance has already made Barstool Sports Golf Guy Dan Rapaport, who was hesitant to accept LIV Golf, reconsider his opinion. “Difficult to justify simply ignoring the circuit which has 3 of the top 6 Masters rankings,” he wrote on Twitter shortly after the event ended. Perhaps last week’s major will inspire others in the golf world to think the same way. And maybe now fans will even start rooting for the Saudi-backed league to succeed in the sport!
