One of college football the biggest regular season games between then-No. 1 Texas and then-No. 4 Georgia was briefly delayed on Saturday after Texas students throw trash on the field at DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium.
On Monday, a well-known Texas alumnus and Longhorns “Minister of Culture” Matthew McConaughey issued a statement on X (formerly Twitter) directed at Texas students, calling the incident “uncool” and a “bogey move.” He also said the Longhorn Nation was “better than this.”
“First of all, you were electric Saturday night when we hosted Georgia. Well done. Let’s keep it up. Even though our Horns didn’t get the W, you created a measurable advantage on the field,” wrote McConaughey, who has been a constant figure at Texas games in recent years.
“But let’s be real about the field problem we had with the bottle bombing. Not cool. Bogey move. Yeah, that call was BS, but we’re better than that. Longhorn Nation knows how to show up, show up like no other, and let’s always keep our class. So, in the future, let’s clean up this kind of BS and put this behind us for good. We need to stick together on this.
The play that led to the incident McConaughey is referring to took place in the third quarter, when officials called a controversial defensive pass interference against the Longhorns. The call was later canceled following the delay on the ground, which had Georgia coach Kirby Smart rather furious about the post-match.
THE The SEC announced Sunday that Texas was fined $250,000 for interrupting Saturday’s game as a violator of its policies regarding sportsmanship, game management and alcohol availability. The conference also requires Texas to use all resources to determine which fans were throwing objects, with those identified banned from all Texas events during the 2024-25 sporting year.
“The throwing debris and resulting interruption of play that occurred Saturday night cannot be part of an SEC event,” said SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey. “The SEC is entrusted by its members with the responsibility to enforce its sportsmanship and game management policies and these actions are consistent with this oversight responsibility, including financial sanctions and mandatory reviews.”
