“A nun, a man with one arm and a dwarf” sounds like the start of a potentially inappropriate joke. That, or some sort of circus act. However, for Illinois head football coach Bret Bielema, it was this group that completed one of his old golf foursomes. Wait what?
Even Bielema understood how incredible this collection of humans was. “It sounds like a joke, but it’s a reality,” he told the media.
For context, Bielema recalls his time as a graduate assistant at the University of Iowa, where he played college football from 1989 to 1992. His Fighting Illini will face his Alma Mater this Saturday in Iowa City, which raised some questions. about his glory days during his press conference on Monday.
That’s when the topic of an old Hawkeye golf event and his eclectic quartet came up:
It legitimately took me five watches to realize it was real and not one of those fake videos. It’s so absurd that someone couldn’t have even made up the story, and then the voiceover, if they tried. A nun, a man with one arm who uses four (!!) putters, a dwarf and Bielema, who must have looked like a giant next to the other tree. It looks like a scene from the movie “Big Fish”.
Unfortunately, no one at the press conference pressed this further, which is understandable given that it is a football-related topic. But that leaves us with so many questions. Why did the man with one arm need four putters? Was the nun a stick? Did they play in a scrum or play their own ball? We need more.
