Banyana Banyana and Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Andile Dlamini has condemned cyberbullying, an issue she has been vocal about since her club’s CAF Women’s Champions League triumph. Check it out!

What is the story?

Andile Dlamini recently spoke out about cyberbullying, highlighting how damaging it can be to a person’s mental health.

She raised the subject with the CAF media after Masandawana won her second CAF Women’s Champions League (CAFCL) trophy on Sunday.

Let’s take a closer look at what she had to say…

Dlamini denounces cyberbullying

After a brilliant continental campaign that culminated with a 3-0 victory in Ivory Coast against Sporting Casablanca, winning the CAFCL title and goalkeeper of the tournament award, Andile Dlamini had some words to share regarding harassment in line.

The Bafana Bafana goalkeeper, alongside Zanele Nhlapo, has taken a stand against cyber-harassment targeting footballers, saying it affects the game of athletes at all levels.

“People are just waiting for you to make a mistake so they can control yourself. I actually don’t support that because it’s detrimental to mental health,” says Dlamini, adding:

“We lose a lot of football players because of mental health. Some players get sick from overthinking, because now your heart starts beating fast or now you have to go back into your shell.

“It’s important for people to be positive towards football players or towards an athlete. We’re already under a lot of pressure just representing a lot of people because you’re not just representing yourself,” Dlamini continued.

Dlamini also responded to a fake quote shared on Twitter/X, which falsely stated that the Downs goalkeeper was disappointed at not being selected by Banyana head coach Desiree Ellis at the Women’s World Cup in this year’s FIFA.

The goalkeeping debate has been a hot topic during Banyana’s historic World Cup campaign, with many fans on social media criticizing the selection of Kaylin Swart over Dlamini, who played a pivotal role in South Africa’s triumph at the 2022 African Women’s Cup of Nations in Morocco.

“Cyberbullying is something I do not tolerate. Don’t make this up about me!!! I do not tolerate cyberbullying,” Dlamini wrote in a now-deleted tweet.
