Old adventures die hard.
Since Kyle Shanahan took the 49ers head coaching job, he has been linked to his interest in trading for Kirk Cousins, his signal caller when Shanahan was the offensive coordinator in Washington.
These were more than rumors. Shanahan has publicly stated that he was interested in trading for Cousins years ago and was disappointed he was unable to do so.
Now the 49ers have uncertainty at the quarterback position again, and the 49ers Cousins rumors have come back to life. Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reported last week that many around the league were talking about a potential deal between Cousins and 49ers during the recent NFL scouting roundup.
“Apparently at the scouting meeting there was some discussion, there was some noise, among people within the broader structure of the league, not the media, but people within the league about of the Cousins trade to the 49ers,” Florio said on Pro Football Talk. “It was a hot topic at one point in Indianapolis.”
The scouting group preceded San Francisco signing Sam Darnold, who will serve as the third quarterback in the room with Trey Lance and Brock Purdy returning from injury. This essentially put an end to the Cousins rumors.
Cousins signed a one-year contract worth a total of $35 million and is set to become an unrestricted free agent next season.
