It seems the entire tennis fraternity has been stuck on one particular topic since the end of Roland Garros. No, it’s not the next grass swing that’s been the subject of discussion. The new power couple Stefanos Tsitsipas and Paula Badosa have been making headlines lately. Although they are still in the early stages of their relationship, the duo has been providing fans with plenty of content.

Although there has been speculation about how the two men would adjust to each other, a former tennis player has highlighted the pros and cons of the same sporting relationship. John Lloyd, Chris Evert’s ex-husband, spoke at length on this subject.

For someone with prior experience in the same sporting relationship, John Lloyd made some valid points for the new couple. First, the Briton assessed the disadvantages. He said via Tennis Channel: “If you’re into sports, life on tour can be a little lonely when you’re traveling separately. It’s not the easiest thing to go through, as you both want your careers to be successful.. Lloyd is referring to the days when ATP and WTA events were held in different countries and players were forced to travel alone.

He then focused on the benefits and said: “Tennis players, we are selfish beasts. But the good thing is that you have a relationship with someone who understands exactly what you’re going through. There are things you say to your loved one after they win or after they lose. If you’re not in the game, you might just say the wrong things.“. The mental aspect of the relationship was very carefully evaluated by the former tennis player.

This advice came from Lloyd’s personal experience as he navigated the ups and downs of same-sex marriage during his time with Chris Evert.

What complications did John Lloyd face in his relationship with Chris Evert?

Chris Evert was married to John Lloyd for almost eight years. Lloyd mentioned in his autobiography that he entered a world that was way out of his league. He had to swallow his ego. Although he was one of the popular names at the time, he was not as successful as Chris Evert who dominated the era.

Lloyd also referenced the part where he and Evert were forced to spend most of their year away from each other due to different tour schedules. He experienced the biggest downside of a tennis relationship himself and gave some of the best advice to Tsitsipas and Badosa.
