Georgia would have obtained the CFP according to the new format expanded to 12 teams

ATLANTA — After Georgia rejected by College Football Playoff committee On Sunday, after their loss in the SEC title game, many Bulldog fans expressed their frustration with the decision.

No. 6 UGA will now face No. 5 Florida State at the Capital One Orange Bowl on December 30.

But if we move forward a year in advance, this same topic of discussion in 2024 will no longer exist. This is when the CFP moves from the current four-team format to a 12-team playoff next year.

Let’s say it’s 2024, the SEC Championship Game between Georgia and Alabama would carry virtually no weight. Georgia would automatically be in no matter if it lost, and Alabama will still have a pretty good argument to compete in the 12-team format despite going 11-2 hypothetically.

So even if you were one of those UGA or Florida State fans unhappy with today’s decision, these heated debates and controversial decisions are sometimes objectively fun to engage in , whether your team enters or not, will no longer be as important. next season.

Since the BCS era began 25 years ago, the College Football Playoff format has grown from two teams to four and, starting next year, to 12 teams. The six highest-ranked conference champions will receive automatic bids and the other six highest-ranked teams will complete the new format.

If this year’s College Football Playoff were to be the exact same scenario next year, here’s what the hypothetical matchups would look like:

  • The top four seeds would receive a bye
  • No. 12 Liberty at No. 5 Florida State
  • No. 11 Ole Miss at No. 6 Georgia
  • No. 10 Penn State at No. 7 Ohio State
  • No. 9 Missouri to No. 8 Oregon

Perhaps the best part of these early games: They would all be played in each higher-ranked team’s on-campus stadium, before spilling over into all the big New Year’s bowls for the remainder of the bracket.

So next year this topic will no longer be relevant. Georgia and Florida State would have a chance, but we’ll definitely miss those fun chats that make the game even more entertaining.
