Mike McCarthy announced the Dallas Cowboys theme of the 2023 season: “carpe omnia”, Latin term which means “to seize everything”.
McCarthy created the tradition of giving each year a theme and mantra for the season. He said the theme was chosen because it expressed what he was looking for from the season: “take it all.”
He believes that selecting the appropriate theme should illustrate where the team is in its “progress toward winning a championship.”
“I think it’s very difficult to win a Super Bowl in this league. There’s no doubt about that… But lasting success is, in my opinion, a bigger challenge,” McCarthy said.

There will also be an empty picture frame outside the team room that symbolizes the possibilities to come.
“A picture is worth a thousand words, but the reality is that an empty frame is everything, because it represents all the possibilities and capabilities of what is before us. We are going to do everything we can every day to make this setting a part of the history and tradition of the Dallas Cowboys,” McCarthy said.
He said that when he announced the theme to the team, it was not a big speech but rather a “why” speech because of its importance.
Last season, the theme was resilience, a word that was repeated throughout the season within the Cowboys organization.
McCarthy’s story with Latin terms
McCarthy was asked if he ever used the term “carpe diem,” and he said he did during the 2010-2011 season, for the week of Super Bowl 45.
Carpe diem is Latin for “seize the day,” which McCarthy and the Packers did by winning the Super Bowl over the Pittsburgh Steelers 31-25 at Cowboys Stadium.
At the time, McCarthy did weekly themes, as opposed to the annual themes he does today.
He said, “I hope it has the same success” for the Cowboys this season.
