Bucs’ second goal against the Citizens remains a subject of debate

Cape Town City coach Eric Tinkler believes Orlando Pirates’ winning goal should not have been allowed.

This after the Buccaneers secured an impressive 2-0 victory over the Citizens at Orlando Stadium on Tuesday night.

Patrick Maswanganyi’s second-half winning goal was controversial and it remains unclear whether the full circumference of the ball crossed the line.

Pirates were 1-0 up thanks to a Zakhele Lepasa cracker when Maswanganyi latched onto a cross from the left and rolled the ball into the net.

It is unclear whether by the time City goalkeeper Darren Keet smothered the ball it had crossed the line.

By then, City staged a comeback and troubled the Buccaneers, but the questionable goal took their breath away.

The incident has led to increasingly loud calls for the implementation of the Video Assistant Referee in South African football.

Speaking to Supersport TV after the match, Tinkler said: “Their second goal, in my opinion, was not a goal.

“We allow this to happen week after week with no consequences, what are we going to do? We move on to the next game, there is nothing we can do.

However, he praised the Pirates for their fast-paced attacking style of play, saying the Sea Robbers are a “very good attacking team”.

“If you look at the goals they have already scored this season, offensively they are well structured and organized, and they play with a lot of speed.

“Our plan was to press them hard and high, and we did that very well. Defensively, we let ourselves down. We got caught every time there was a long ball, and they started creating moments from that.

“Zakhele Lepasa’s goal was great, it was a good turn and a great finish. I can’t blame anyone on this.

“Our response in the second half was much better, as well as the changes we made. We had them on our backs.

“To be honest we had most of the possession and territory, they only caught us on the counter.

“We just have to take our chances in the next few games. I can’t fault my players, I was happy with what I saw in the second half against Pirates.
