Although the final outcome seems inevitable, it would be surprising if Washington Commanders head coach Ron Rivera does not finish the 2023 season.
Ron Rivera is live on borrowed time as head coach of the Washington Commanders. The writing was on the wall long before Josh Harris’ ownership group purchased the franchise from Dan Snyder, which was quickly followed by another disappointing campaign when higher standards were expected.
Rivera had his Fourth consecutive losing season confirmed by Sunday’s clash against the Miami Dolphins. While calls to immediately remove him from the equation are deafening, it appears Harris is ready to end the campaign before putting the former linebacker out of his misery.
This is a controversial topic among fans. There has been almost no progression on the court, with Rivera’s roster construction also being criticized for giving more weight to claims that he should be fired.
Some may not like it, but here are three reasons why Rivera will finish the 2023 campaign before the inevitable happens.
After Ron Rivera fired defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio, he took it upon himself to take charge of the underperforming group. This didn’t bring immediate improvements, but it was always unrealistic when you consider how devastating the Miami Dolphins offense is under Mike McDaniel.
If Josh Harris had fired Rivera during the season, no one could have legitimately taken over the defensive play. Ryan Kerrigan maybe? But that’s a lot to ask in difficult circumstances.
Keeping Rivera gives Washington an experienced defensive player. But judging by Week 13’s efforts, most players on that side of the football have already downed their tools.
