Golf legend Tiger Woods makes huge jump in world rankings after finishing 18th at Hero World Challenge – FirstSportz

Last Sunday marked the end of the Hero World Challenge 2023. An event which saw Scottie Scheffler winning another title this year also marked the return of Tiger Woods. While the veteran went through a rough patch and finished 18th in the unofficial 72-hole event, his ranking took a considerable jump. Woods climbed more than 430 places and entered the top 1000 according to the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR).

Since his absence from the field, Woods’ ranking had taken a big hit. Recently he reached a career-low ranking of 1307th place as he fought to recover from his injury. His appearance at the Hero World Challenge and his performances raised his rank significantly.

According to Golf Digest, Woods entered the tournament last week ranked 1,328th. Over the weekend, the 47-year-old jumped over 430 places and is now currently ranked at position 898.

Since the rankings update, fans have criticized Woods and the OWGR committee for their points distribution. Will Zalatoris, returning from injury after eight months, finished last in the Hero World Challenge rankings. Despite this, he gained more points in the world rankings than Alex Fitzpatrick who finished tied for eighth at the Australian Open this weekend.

Tiger Woods climbed 430 places in the “Official World Golf Ranking,” from 1,328 to 898 this week.

What did Tiger do for this astronomical increase in OWGR points?

Tiger finished 18th out of 20 in a no-cut tournament organized by himself.

The Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) is a criterion used to rank professional golfers around the world. Points are awarded to players for their performance on the greens by the OWGR committee. Leaderboard points differ from event to event, however, with some receiving more points than others, as seen in this case with the Hero World Challenge.

Fans on social media are now unhappy with OWGR’s points distribution. Tiger Woods’ huge jump in rank has once again caused a huge debate on this topic. One user claimed that the system had become a “joke“. Check out some reactions to this huge development below:

Which system is more rigged, golf or CFB?

-Andy Evans (@Pinsanddens) December 4, 2023

OWGR hypocrisy at its finest. I thought no cut events with limited fields could get OWGR points because……..

Oh wait, that’s only if it’s a LIV event, OWGR is such a joke.

– Golf instructor (@KevinBl64896899) December 4, 2023

More nonsense, wait until you see the “new” points distributions on the PGA Tour… the high events are worth as much as the majors (almost) and the rest of the events are played for crumbs (in terms of points).

– laundry brand (@letitflye) December 5, 2023

What a sham. All. The golf cabal will soon be under the leadership of the PIF and the LIV will emerge victorious. Like Phil said, wait for shot 26

– Fernando Franks (@FernandoFranks8) December 4, 2023

He should organize more events and he will be in the top 50 soon

– Mr. LIV PIF (@steven1976a) December 5, 2023

He will be number 1 next Sunday. These idiots will give it to him.

-Rodney Miller (@rodm21) December 4, 2023

It pays to be the greatest golfer of all time.

-Mike Soto (@MiguelS61529397) December 4, 2023

What a joke this system is…

– Crossfit Hank (@justinhansen10) December 4, 2023

He finished a tournament… worth celebrating

– Joe Smith (@bewarebefore) December 4, 2023

The OWGR and its committee have been in the spotlight recently due to their decision regarding LIV Golf. The 54-hole breakaway circuit does not receive these points which affects the ranking of several players. Their request to receive OWGR points was deniedwhich led some fans to berate the ranking system.

It is now likely that Woods’ jump in rank will be brought up and discussed. But he probably wouldn’t pay much attention to it because he prepares to compete at the PNC Championship with his son, Charlie in a few days.
