The WNBA’s recent rise in popularity may be almost entirely due attributed to Caitlin Clark and Angel Reeseincluding three times champion and two times MVP Breanna Stewart recognizes. Even though Stewart is arguably the best player in the league, she praised the Indiana fever And Chicago Sky stars for their ability to handle public pressure early in their careers.

Stewart noted that WNBA players must deal with both praise and criticism as the league grows in popularity. She chose Clark and Reese as the two who illustrates it the most.

“If we want to be in this space where we get everything we want, you have to be able to take both,” Stewart said on “The Pivot” podcast. “It is what it is. Don’t let it shake you. I think Angel, Caitlin, those two in particular, don’t let it shake you. They know that they’re really elevating the game and not everyone is going to like them, not everyone is going to hate them.”

The league has already expanded twice since Clark and Reese’s first season. The Golden State Valkyries were introduced in 2025, and the Toronto Tempo and Portland Fire are scheduled to begin play during the 2026 season.

Stewart’s admission comes as The WNBA remains in a state of uncertaintywhile the entire league is still waiting for a new collective agreement. Commissioner Cathy Engelbert said she hopes to reach a settlement in the coming week to avoid a possible lockout.

The ongoing situation has most of the league’s veterans still in free agency despite training camps set to begin in just a few months. Free agents are expected to receive significant salary increases under the new collective bargaining agreement.
