Kyle Busch, a great NASCAR driver, has struggled mightily in recent years and hopes of a turnaround in 2026 have yet to materialize. His winless streak continues after the first four races of the season, bringing his drought to 97 races without a passage to victory lane.
Busch said he plans to continue running until his son, Brexton Busch, reaches the stage where both can share the track. Yet as each race goes by without a win, the chatter around the garage gets louder and louder. Fans continue to wait for the tide to turn, only to leave race weekends with the same disappointment.

Now, voices within the sport are being heard about what might lie ahead. During a segment on At the heart of the raceformer driver-turned-analyst Kyle Petty talked about Busch’s season and the No. 8 car’s chances for a breakthrough, and they’re not exactly promising.
Petty said he’d like to see No. 8 Richard Childress Racing the driver reaches Victory Lane, but he doesn’t expect that to happen this year. “I don’t think we’re going to win.” said Petty, repeating this view more than once.
He made it clear that this position had nothing to do with Busch’s skills behind the wheel. “I think Kyle Bush is one of the greatest race car drivers to ever crawl through a window and attach himself to one of these things.”
“And I think he still is today. I think he still is today. But this team is just far enough away from where it needs to be that he can’t put that car on his back and carry it around,” he added.

The discussion then turned to Steve Letartewho once took the stand in the pit for Hendrick Motorsports. He echoed the same line of thought in examining Busch’s journey throughout the NASCAR Cup Series season, highlighting the change in the pit box, where Jim Pohlman stepped in as Busch’s crew chief for the 2026 campaign. Teams often make such decisions in hopes of turning a new leaf. A new voice or change in approach can sometimes bring a team back into contention.
Even with this decision, Letarte said the gap on track between the No. 8 team and the front of the field still remains. From a performance standpoint, he said he couldn’t point to any signs that a win would come from pace alone.
This does not close the door to the risk of surprise. NASCAR can see the scene completely reversed in the blink of an eye. Trouble for the leaders, a well-timed caution or a gamble in the pits can give a driver an opening that didn’t seem to exist before.
Busch‘s experience could still put him in position if the right circumstances present themselves on a particular race day. Yet these paths rely on the kind of ruptures that only happen every once in a while. So far this season, Busch has managed three top-20 finishes, including one in the top-15.
