MILAN– Kevin Fiala will miss the remainder of the NHL regular season with the Los Angeles Kings due to broken left legs.

The 29-year-old forward was injured while playing for Team Switzerland in a 5-1 loss to Team Canada at the Milan Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics on Friday.

The Kings announced Sunday that he would be re-evaluated at the end of the regular season.

“This is not the ending I imagined for my first Olympics,” Fiala said in an Instagram post on Sunday.

“Thank you everyone for your support. I really appreciate your support. Good luck to my Swiss team, go get them!”

Switzerland, which went 1-1-1-0 in the preliminary round to rank fifth, will face No. 12 seed Italy in the qualifying playoffs on Tuesday (6:10 a.m. ET; Peacock, ICI Tele, CBC Gem).

Fiala was hit in the side boards by the Canadian striker Tom Wilsonwho then fell on the left leg at 17:10 of the third period. Fiala, who was lying on his stomach on the ice, was able to raise himself up on his elbows but did not move his lower body. He was then taken to hospital.

Switzerland attacking Nicolas Hischier said it was clear to him that Wilson did not intend to hurt Fiala.

“It seemed like a harmless game,” Hischier said. “I don’t see any intention. It’s an unfortunate game and things like that happen. You get tangled up there, you fall and you twist your leg.

“You saw (Canada) was going all out and they were hitting the stick as well. Nobody likes to see that. I think both sides wish him the best.”

Fiala had 40 points (18 goals, 22 assists) in 56 games this season for the Kings, who entered the Olympic break three points behind the Anaheim Ducks for the Western Conference’s second Stanley Cup playoff wild card.

“It’s obviously moving to see a teammate fall like that,” Swiss captain Romain Josi said. “He’s such a huge player for us, such a great player and such a great person.”
