The WNBA finds itself in the middle of a major crossroads for the league this offseason. CBA talks between WNBA and players union have been sluggish in recent months. THE The WNBA recently sent a new proposal to the union after almost a month of radio silence. A WNBA expressed her frustrations with some WNBA owners during a recent podcast episode.

Fever guard Sophie Cunningham discussed a topic which she thinks WNBA owners are completely divided on.

“Half of our league, as owners, wants to invest and give, and like the other half, they don’t,” Cunningham said Thursday via his Show Me Something podcast. “It was like New York, Seattle, Phoenix, Indiana. Indiana is building one of the best facilities in the world in 2027. Training facilities.”

Cunningham says some owners are committed to investing in their organization. Meanwhile, she classifies other owners as doing the bare minimum.

“Indiana takes care of you. They really take care of you from top to bottom. New York does the same thing, Phoenix, Seattle, I think the San Francisco Valkyries are doing a great job. I think Toronto is going to do a great job, but it blows my mind knowing these other owners are doing the bare minimum,” Cunningham added. “And it’s like you’re selling your team and letting other people who want to be part of something big put their money into it.”

It is natural to wonder whether this divergence of attitudes has any impact on the CBA negotiations.

Cunningham’s comments come in what could be the final hours before a possible disruption to the 2026 WNBA season.

The league must carry out a expansion project for two new franchisesa lengthy free agency period and the 2026 WNBA Draft before players can actually take the court.

Hopefully the two sides will reach an agreement quickly. Otherwise, the WNBA could be headed for the first lockout in the league’s 30-year history.
