(Asia Economy Reporter No Woo-rae) ○…Henrik Stenson (Sweden) has been named captain of the 2023 Ryder Cup.
On the 16th (Korean time), the American Golf Channel reported: “Stenson, who has won 6 times on the PGA Tour, will lead the European team in the Ryder Cup, the golf competition between the United States and Europe, which will be held in Italy next year.” Last year, he supported the European team as vice-captain at the Ryder Cup held in Wisconsin, USA. Next year’s Ryder Cup will take place over three days starting September 29 at the Marco Simone Golf & Country Club in Guidonia Montecelio, near Rome, Italy.
Jack Johnson (USA), who has 12 victories on the PGA Tour, was chosen as captain of the American team. Stenson won The Open 2016 major tournament, becoming Sweden’s first major champion. Although born in Sweden, he loves the Middle East so much that he even bought a house in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, earning him the nickname “Prince of the Desert.” In fact, among his 11 European victories, including back-to-back DP World Tour Championships in 2014, 4 victories came in the Middle East.
He is famous among domestic fans for his “panty shot”. In March 2009, during the CA championship, when his ball landed in a muddy field, he took off all his clothes except his underwear to protect his pants and made the shot. Mainly active in Europe, he won the 2nd and 4th rounds of the 2013 PGA Tour Playoffs, winning an astronomical $10 million FedEx Cup bonus, landing a “$12.88 million jackpot.” He appreciates a style of play that favors direct breakthroughs. Currently, he is focusing on the PGA Tour.
