Alex de Minaur unmoved by United Cup defeat to Casper Ruud in Australian Open build-up

Alex de Minaur is not concerned about his Australian Open preparations, believing he can “flip that switch” after recording his first career defeat to Casper Ruud.

World number seven Minaur cut a subdued figure after his 6-3, 6-3 loss to Ruud in Australia’s opening United Cup victory over Norway in Sydney.

The 26-year-old admitted to making uncharacteristic errors against the three-time Grand Slam finalist.

De Minaur committed eight double faults on his home court as he struggled to display his second-serve prowess against world number 12 Ruud.

Last season on the ATP Tour, de Minaur was second to world number two Jannik Sinner for the highest percentage of points won on second serves.

But he was well below his average on Saturday night.

“It’s not really in my DNA to make so many mistakes,” de Minaur said.

“Today, more than anything, it was just about getting used to the conditions.

“I had a little trouble, I played a little harder in the evening.

“I felt like I couldn’t get that feeling on my kick serve, which I’ve had no problem doing in the past.

“I lost a little rhythm, more than anything, and Casper came out playing very aggressive.”

But de Minaur said he did not feel overwhelmed by Ruud, even though he conceded the first three games in less than 12 minutes.

“I was in a good state of mind and even after the match I am able to handle this match properly,” de Minaur said.

“There are a few things I can do better but also… it’s the first game of the year.

“Ultimately the season starts again, so hopefully I can flip that switch and… execute in those big moments.”

After beating Malene Helgø 6-2, 7-6 (7/3) in the women’s singles as a last-minute replacement for Maya Joint, Storm Hunter teamed up with John-Patrick Smith in the mixed doubles to claim a 2-1 victory over Norway.

De Minaur will look to return to form on Tuesday for Australia’s draw against Czechia.
