The WNBA is about to have its own Victor Wembanyama originally appeared on Sports news. Add The Sporting News as Favorite source by clicking here.

Even before Victor Wembanyama arrived in San Antonio in the fall of 2023, fans had been salivating over his potential for years. Now in his third season, Wembanyama is reaching his potential as a breakthrough player: a 7’4” defensive nightmare with the shooting and ball-handling ability of someone a foot smaller.

To date, the late Margo Dydek (7’2”) is the only WNBA player seven feet or taller. Stephanie Okechukwu could soon join her.

The Texas Tech Lady Raiders have reportedly signed Okechukwu as a mid-season addition. Head coach of Texas Tech Krista Gerlich appeared to confirm Okechukwu’s arrival Wednesday in a post on X, although she has yet to receive the green light from the NCAA.

If her signing is approved, Okechukwu would instantly become the greatest player in women’s college basketball. She has a 7’4” wingspan that would make 15-0 Texas Tech even better defensively, and she can already dunk with ease.

There’s still a way to go before Okechukwu can enter the WNBA, and she’ll have to prove herself at the collegiate level first. But the hype train is already starting to leave the station – and in a few years, the WNBA will have its answer in Wembanyama.
