Kournikova rose to international prominence in the late 1990s, becoming one of the most recognizable figures in women’s tennis despite never winning a WTA singles title. Born in Moscow in 1981, she turned professional in 1995 and quickly gained attention with her athleticism, aggressive baseline game and strong net game. Kournikova reached a career-high singles ranking of No. 8 in the world in 2000 and had notable results at Grand Slam tournaments, including semifinal appearances at Wimbledon in 1997 and 1998. Her early successes established her as one of the best players of her generation and helped fuel a renewed global interest in women’s tennis.
While singles titles eluded her, Kournikova enjoyed significant success in doubles, where she truly excelled. Partnering Martina Hingis, she won two doubles titles at the Australian Open in 1999 and 2002 and reached the world number one doubles ranking. Chronic injuries, particularly to her back, ultimately shortened her career, leading her to retire from professional tennis in 2003, at just 21 years old.
