Tiger Woods, about two months later undergo back surgerysaid Tuesday that he can now putt.
Then he did it.
I also coached some people.
One would guess that you would see at least some golf this week since The woodswhich hosts the World of Heroes Challenge. BelowYou can watch the 15-time major winner via a two-minute video posted Wednesday to his events team’s social media feeds. Below are some additional thoughts.
What Moves First When Putting, According to Tiger Woods
The putter head, he said.

Not the body.
“Just like in a golf swing,” Woods said.
Why Tiger Woods Looks Like He’s “Hitting” His Putts, According to Tiger Woods
On his putts, Woods will bring his putter back to a length appropriate for the length of the putt, bring it back, make contact, and then the follow-through will feel short — or, as he put it, like a punch.
He explained why.
“I believe the weight of the golf ball is what slows the putter down,” Woods said in the video. “So I’m speeding up all the way through, but the weight of the putter head slows it down, so it looks like I’m hitting it. I’m just putting all the energy into the ball, and the ball ends up slowing down the putter head.

“You see some players have a follow-through like that (a longer one), but I don’t understand that because I always – if you see a guy hitting a punch, his swing is going to be shorter on the follow-through compared to a guy who hits it and takes it. It’s going to be a longer follow-through. Well, it’s the same kind of concept. If you have the weight of the ball stopping the putter head, then the swing is going to be slower on the front side. It’s not going to be the same. So It looks like I’m hitting it, but the weight of that golf ball is just slowing down that mass (the putter head) – that’s all.”
Why Older Putters Help With Tiger Woods’ Putting, According to Tiger Woods
Woods explained that this was because they were mostly smaller.
“With a much lighter grip and a smaller grip, the overall mass of my putter is much lighter,” Woods said in the video. “So because it’s a lot lighter, it’s affected a lot more by ball weight than these newer putters. Your putters with bigger grips, bigger heads, more mass, it’s going to take more than my putter.

“Ben Crenshaw small putter 8802? Things stop right away. It has no mass. So the weight of the ball is really affected. That’s why I feel like I’m doing this, but I’m really not.
But should you putt like that?
Good question. Perhaps the best answer is comfort. If you do a 360° turn before putting the ball in and the ball goes in, do a 360° turn. If your follow through is longer for some reason and the ball goes in, continue your follow through longer.
Then again, if a shorter follow-up works for Woods, it’s at least worth looking into. If you’re interested in learning more, Ryan Mouque, an instructor based in Australia, also recently posted about moving, and you can check out his posts. here.
