June 22 – San Francisco Giants manager Bob Melvin says club officials have spoken to Major League Baseball about abuse allegations made by pitcher Sean Hjelle’s wife.
MLB is investigating the allegations made by Caroline Hjelle, who posted a video of herself with their two children on social media on Friday with this caption: “When my MLB husband abandoned us on Mother’s Day a week later (this video was taken) once I finally found out about his affairs and stopped putting up with his abuse, so I raised two boys on my own.”
She added hashtags including #divorce and #cheating.
“Obviously we’re aware of it. He talked to me about it last night,” Melvin told reporters Saturday. “We’ve spoken to MLB, and at this point it’s within their jurisdiction, so we can’t comment further.”
MLB investigates such cases as part of its joint policy on domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse.
Hjelle said after San Francisco’s 3-2 win over the Boston Red Sox on Saturday that he and his wife were divorcing.
“I have no official comment at the moment,” Hjelle told reporters. “I would really like to speak with my agent, my lawyer. This has been going on for over a year now as far as our relationship, our divorce, our separation and everything else. … I just want to talk to the appropriate people and understand what the steps are. I just want to take it easy right now.
“So, no comment at this time. I’m sure I will have one eventually. I don’t have an exact timeline on this, but I would definitely like to talk with the people who are handling the situation with me and for me before making an official statement.”
Hjelle, 28, is in his fourth season with the Giants. A right-handed reliever, he is 1-1 with a 4.66 ERA in six appearances.
Last season, he appeared in 58 games and was 3-4 with a 3.90 ERA. He has a career record of 7-8 with a 4.80 ERA over 87 games (one start).
He remains eligible to pitch during the investigation.
