South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer says he’s OK with hosting preseason college football games.
Spring games are a hot topic in college football as teams across the country continue to alter their operations around them. Some shows have canceled them altogether, some no longer air them on television, and still others have a public practice that fans can attend.
Colorado head coach Deion Sanders expressed his desire for a spring scrimmage against another college football team and posted an open invitation on Twitter for a team to travel to Boulder for a scrimmage. Syracuse head coach Fran Brown appears to have accepted the open invitation, but nothing official has come of it.
In an interview with college football analyst Josh Pate, South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer explained that he also participates in college football preseason games. Here’s what he had to say on the subject.
“I was an assistant coach here at South Carolina in 2007, ‘8, ‘9 and ’10, and then I remember doing an interview where I talked about wishing we had a preseason game… Because we’re the only sport at any level that doesn’t have one,” Beamer said.
“I love the first games, but the first games are so difficult because there are so many unknowns about your team,” Beamer continued. “Because you think you’re good but you really have no idea… Spring training is great because there’s great teaching and all that, but to be able to culminate spring training with a spring game against someone else and we’re all looking for ways to generate revenue or give back to others, there are so many ways in my mind that we can do that.”
