The Flyers will host what is considered the NHL’s first theme night honoring jam band Phish during their Jan. 8 game against the Maple Leafs at Xfinity Mobile Arena.
Fans who purchase tickets through a special link will receive a co-branded Phish-Flyers t-shirt, featuring the group’s logo reimagined in the image of Gritty, the team’s popular mascot. The evening will also feature a pre-game concert by local tribute band RiftPhilly.
The Phish theme party is remarkable given the proliferation of Grateful Dead theme parties across all sports over the last few years. Phish are widely considered the most important cultural descendants of the Dead and have an equally loyal fan base. Fans’ deep affinity for the group is ripe for exploitation by sports teams with celebrations and giveaways. The group is represented by Red Light Management.
Phish singer and guitarist Trey Anastasio is a longtime Flyers fan, creating a natural connection between the team and the group. The Flyers have previously hosted theme nights celebrating the Grateful Dead and Pearl Jam.
