Serena Williams faces insecurities like the rest of us.
In a conversation with her sister, Venus Williams, the 23 time Grand Chelem champion, shared that she was not confident in her playing capacity.
“I sucked. I was bad. I didn’t have it,” said Serena came to their podcast Stockton Street. “I only struck the lobs. Remember, I only hit the lobs. I was terrible. I mean, even when I became pro for the first time, I was really bad. Not that I didn’t do it, but I thought I was not so good. I thought I could survive people because I was not really thought.”
Their father, Richard Williams, who was their growing coach, said the sisters to choose a major tournament they could win, and that would be their goal. Venus chose Wimbledon, and Serena wanted it too, but ended up choosing the US Open.

“Then, when Papa told us to choose a tournament to win so that we can focus on the lens, you also chose Wimbledon. And then he said that I had to choose something different. So I chose the United States, but I didn’t really think I would do it,” admitted Serena.
Although he does not want to focus originally on the United States open as a goal educated by her father, Serena won the 1999 US Open for her first Grand Slam victory. As for Venus, she ended up winning her first Wimbledon match in 2000 when she beat Lindsay Davenport.
Their first victories were only the start of their monumental career. Serena would win 22 other Grand Chelem titles, and Venus would again win Wimbledon the following year in 2001, as well as three other championships in 2005, 2007 and 2008. Serena also succeeded in Wimbledon, winning seven championships in her career (2002, 2003, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2015 and 2016). Venus also succeeded in US Open, winning back in 2000 and 2001.
When did Serena Williams and Venus Williams start their podcast?
The tennis pros announced their podcast last month, which bears the name of the street on which they grew up. The sisters shared their reasoning behind the start of the podcast, it is to share more with each other.
“As close as we are, we had to keep so far away because of our jobs,” Serena told the publication. “As much as she is my sister, she is also my opponent, and you cannot be as open as you want. So, this is a real opportunity to do something that we have tried to do, and also just a discovery thing too.”
Stockton Street is broadcast on Wednesday on X.
