Scheffler stormed from the 14th night to third with 10 birdies – five out of the first nine and five at the rear.
It was only refused a share of the head after a chip in a bunker on the 14th per four led to a double bogey.
Scheffler pulled 70 in the first round, which ended his series of 21 successive scores under the age of 70 and 68 in the second.
“There are certainly a few tips for this golf course, things you have to get used to,” he said.
“There are difficult things to notice in training circles. But when you start playing in tournament conditions, you start to see some of these nuances.”
The US Open JJ Spaun and Russell Henley champion are better placed by the other Ryder Cup players on Nine Under.
Griffin, a choice of captain who will make his debut at the Ryder Cup, said: “I must have this hunting spirit as a leader because I know that all these guys behind me will remain aggressive and I have to do everything I can to stay in front.”
