The Augusta Municipal Golf Course, known locally as “The patch”, encourages residents to voice their opinions on how to improve the golf course.
THE municipal golf course was established in 1928 and is located at 2023 Highland Ave. Partnerships with the City of Augusta, Augusta National Golf Club, Augusta Technical College and First Tee of Augusta are working together to update the property.
Five input sessions open to the public at the First Tee in Augusta took place between Thursday, November 16 and Saturday, November 18. Topics addressed by citizens included affordability, historical context, physical aspects and ways to involve the community.
Leon Maben, a participant in the input session, said the golf course is important because it is run by the city and is an affordable course for anyone to play golf.
“It’s a place for the community,” Maben added. “They play golf, they sit and just talk about community and civics and current events. And most of all, my thing is the historicity of The Patch and people talking about The Patch.
“Our commitment to the Augusta community is equal to our commitment to golf,” Augusta National Golf Club President Fred Ridley said when the project was announced in a statement. Video from October 10.
Augusta Technical College will move its golf course management program to The Patch as part of the partnership. First Tee of Augusta, whose current location is less than a mile away, is also expected to be on site.
“I think it’s a great move for the partners – by that I mean National, Augusta Tech, First Tee – it’s up to all of them to open the funnel to get public input. Making decisions in a vacuum or behind a curtain will only create suspicion, doubt and doubt and we can at least move forward knowing that they had the collective wisdom of this room,” said David Brotherton, a participating in the contribution session.
