Annika Sorenstam announced the creation of a new award – the Annika Inspiration Award – to “recognize outstanding alumnae who have made a significant impact on the world beyond the golf course.” The LPGA and World Golf Hall of Fame member revealed details of the new award Wednesday during a panel at the PGA Merchandise Show.
Sorenstam, winner of 72 LPGA events, including 10 majors, launched the Annika Foundation in 2007 to empower and advance young women around the world through golf. The foundation provides opportunities in the game at the junior, collegiate and professional levels.
“We have always aimed to empower young women to discover their passions and achieve their dreams on and off the course, and I couldn’t be more proud of the work the foundation is doing,” Sorenstam said in a press release.
“The Annika Inspiration Award allows us to celebrate the incredible contributions of our alumni in all areas of life. It’s proof that the values learned through golf – dedication, honesty, resilience and passion – can create lasting success, whatever path you choose.
“Annika Alumnae” will be defined as past participants in an Annika Junior Event, Annika Cup Event, Latin American Women’s Amateur Tournament, Annika Collegiate Event, Annika Development Program and /or the Annika Women’s All Pro Tour, as well as past Annika recipients. Prizes awarded by Stifel.
The first winner is expected to be recognized in November at the Annika event driven by Gainbridge at the Pelican LPGA event in Belleair, Florida.
